A Beginner's Guide to Collecting LEGO Star Wars Minifigures

Three ways to start a Star Wars minifigure collection, plus tips on codes, condition and keeping helmets bright.

By

Happy Star Wars Day! Whether you've been a fan since the cinema days or you're discovering the saga through your kids, LEGO® Star Wars™ minifigures are one of the easiest and most rewarding collections to start. With a vast cast of heroes, villains, droids and troopers, there's always another character to add.

Why Star Wars figures are so collectable

The range spans every era of the saga, which means you can collect in lots of different ways. And because many characters have been released more than once in different outfits, the hunt for the "right" version is half the fun.

Three ways to start

1. By character

Pick a favourite, such as a Jedi, a bounty hunter or a droid, and collect every version you can find. This is how many people build a focused, personal collection.

2. By side

Build a Light Side and a Dark Side display. It makes a striking shelf and gives you an easy scene to recreate.

3. By army

Troopers look best in numbers. A squad of identical figures is a classic display, and it's where condition matters in a good way: Used - worn figures are a budget-friendly way to build up a unit. See our condition guide for what that grade means.

Know your codes

Star Wars minifigures use the prefix sw, followed by a number. For example, sw0614 is the Senate Commando. The code identifies exactly one design, so it's the best way to make sure you're buying the figure you want rather than a similar one. Type it into the search bar to jump straight to a figure.

Tips for Star Wars collectors

  • Check the print and accessories. Helmets, capes, blasters and lightsabers can change which version you've got.
  • Mind the condition. Choose New for display or gifts, Used - good for value, Used - worn for play and builds.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight. Helmets and white armour are most at risk of fading.
  • Make a wanted list. Write down the codes you need and check back, since most figures are one-offs.
