The nights are drawing in, the pumpkins are out and the shelf in the corner could do with a bit of spookiness. Halloween is a brilliant excuse to put together a themed minifigure display, whether you're a seasoned collector or you're keeping the kids busy before trick-or-treating. Here are our favourite ways to do it.
1. A haunted mini-scene
You don't need a huge build. A few grey bricks make a wall, a tilted tile makes a gravestone and a single tree shape does the rest. Add a few characters and you've got a scene in minutes.
2. Pick your cast
Think about the monsters, witches and wizards you'd like to see. Some places to look:
- Harry Potter for witches, wizards, spooky creatures and Dark Arts villains
- Collectible Minifigures for costume characters in a range of fun outfits
- Marvel and DC for villains who'd fit right in on a stormy night
- Ninjago for skeleton and ghost-style characters
- Disney for the classic villains
3. A costume party
Take a group of figures and stage a Halloween party: some in costumes, some on the guest list. It's a fun way to mix themes that wouldn't normally sit together.
4. Add some atmosphere
- Lighting: a small battery LED light behind or beneath the scene gives an instant glow.
- Backdrop: use dark card or fabric to make colours stand out.
- Little details: pumpkins, bats and cobwebs are easy to make from a few bricks and bits of paper.
5. Play it with the kids
Let children make up the story. Who lives in the house? Who's coming to the door? A box of figures and some bricks can fill an afternoon, and Used - worn figures are ideal for play since scuffs won't matter. See the condition guide for more on each grade.
6. Take it down gracefully
When the season ends, don't pile everything in a box. Keep each figure with its accessories in small bags, label them with the catalogue code and you'll be ready for next year. We cover storage in more detail in our January guide to cleaning, storing and displaying a collection.
